The Lake

A magnificent star-shaped lake glitters like a jewel amidst the emerald green wooded slopes. This 24 hectare lake is skirted by 5 Kms long, black tapped road is focal point of kodai, This lake was created in 1863 by Sir Vere Hendry Levinge, who was the collector of Madurai, retired and settled in kodai.

Coaker's Walk

A kilometre's walk from the lake. It derives the name Lt. Coaker, who prepared the map of Kodai. Coaker's Walk runs along a steep, emerald green wooded slope. From Coaker's Walk one can have a breath-taking view of the plains below.

Bryant Park

This park is situated on the eastern side of the lake. It is noted for flowers, hybrids and grafts, Cut flowers are exported from here.A glass house which shelters fine varieties of flowers, Flower show is conducted every year in May as part of summer festival.

Green Valley View

It is about 5.5 Kms from the lake and located very close to Golf club, it commands a beautiful view of entire vaigai dam, As the valley is very deep, dense and dangerous, recommended to see with precautionary measures.

Pillar Rocks

It is about 7.4 Kms from the lake. Three boulders stand shoulder to shoulder vertically measuring of about 122 meters providing a beautiful view. It has a mini garden.

Dolphins Nose

To reach Dolphins nose at a distance of 8 kms from the bus stand, one has to follow the route specified here.There is an old road after crossing Pambar Bridge near levinge stream. A rough curve rounds the hillside which leads to a point where a flat rock projects over an awful chesm of 6600 feet deep. This is Dolphins nose. On the way, beautiful views of plains and steepy rocky eascarpeints called rolling hills can be seen. The old village of vellagavi can be reached through the rugged bridle path.

Athirappally Waterfalls

Athirappally Waterfalls is located 78 kms from Kochi (Cochin), located at the entrance to Sholayar ranges, this waterfall is a popular picnic spot. Affording to the onlookers, one of the most bewitching sights, Athirappally Falls is about 80 feet high and located in the forest area. Combined with the greenery, it infuses freshness into any tired soul. The Athirapally Falls join the Chalakkudy River after plummeting a drop of 80 feet.

We have been hearing about Bheemeswari fishing camp on the bank of Cauveri for some time. Mostly it was about the staying there in a tent overnight. We were slightly skeptic about staying in a tent.

We tried to get a booking a year back when my friend Prashant was in Banaglore but didn't manage to get a cottage.

This was a long weekend and I have been longing to hit the road with my SX4. we checked out http://www.junglelodges.com/V2/Bheemeshwari.htm and found that they also have a day visit option. This looked like a good option , because we can checkout the cottages ourselves and go for night stay later.

We set out on the journey on a Friday morning. We took the NICE Road and reached Kanakapura. Then from Kanakpura -- Sathnur Junction -- Muttati -- Bheemeshwari (120 Kms)

The roads are good throughout and the drive was nice. The last few miles were really beautiful.. we took winding ghat road along Cauvery river.

We reached Bheemmeswari around 9:30, took the ticket. The package include day Lunch, Tea/Coffee, Coracle Ride and Guided Trekking

We set out on the treck with a guide at 10 AM. The aim was to reach on top of a hillock.

we walked around 2 Km to reach on the top where there was a watch tower. we were tired by now and took water and refreshments that we carried. We climbed on top of the watch tower and enjoyed the breeze for a while..

The view of Cuavery river from the zenith was amazing.

We started our journey back, this time we took a different route along the river. we sat on the polished rounded stones on the bank of the river for a while.

Reached back on the base and took a cup of tea and went around to check out the place. Th place was well maintained and had lot of trees.

We took rest in the swing for a while and walked toward the restaurant which was at the far end of the resort.

There are 2 types of stay. Test and Cotttage. The tent rest on a elevated base which has steel frame and covered toilet. This frame is covered with a plastic tent.. not as bad as we imagined. (Check out the tent in the background)

The Log Hut was good with Wooden walls and had enough privacy.

My wife enjoyed the Jhoolas that can be found everywhere in the resort.

After the lunch we took a nap and got ready for the Coracle ride. We had taken Coracle ride several times before and was wondering why we wear the safety jackets ...

We wore the Orange Safety jackets and started Coracle ride..

Eeverything was fine for a while, slowly the river started becoming violent . The coracle started rocking and heart beat almost stopped..

Alleppy Backwaters

Spending a vacation in Alleppy backwaters has been a very long

dream of ours. Well, to be exact since our honey moon. The

Honeymoon plan was to stay at Munnar and then spend a few days

at Alleppy, which was washed out because of flood in Alleppy!

We had been longing to visit Kerala backwaters since then. This holiday season, at last we set out our journey to Alleppy.

We reached Alleppy on 2nd Oct by train. We had booked a suite in Palm grove lake resort in Alleppy in advance. The resort was around 4 km from Alleppy town on the banks of Pun

namada lake. The resort is situated amidst the natural greeneries and the view of the lake from our cottage was amazing.

The resort had a few Hammocks where we were relaxing during the day..

Next to the resort, we found a place were House boat was being built. We went there and saw how the House boat(Kettu vallam )

was being manufactured.

Next day around 11 AM we started to our House boat boarding point, which is a place called Kainakkary. The place was around 15 Km from Alleppy. Most of the boats start from Alleppy town itself, unfortunately our boat was starting from this remote place. Kainakkary is a village in Kuttanad, better known as the “ Rice Bowl of Kerala ” is famous for its paddy fields. On the way we could see large collection of paddy fields stretching out to eternity .. Now we were feeling happy about boardng the boat from this tiny green village.

Wanted to visit Hampi since long..Had been to Belur areound six years back and i was told that Hampi is splendid and must watch.Hampi was the capital ofVijaya Nagara Kingdon from 1300 to 1500.
Virupaksha Temple
One of the earliest buildings to the western end of the city, Virupaksha Temple is dedicated to Virupaksha, a form of Lord Vishnu. The temple houses shrines of Lord Shiva and Goddesses Pampa and Bhuvaneswari. Parts of the temple is said to belong to 11th or 12th century. It is amazing to see that how when a ray of light passes from the east through a hole near the sanctum sanctorum, the shadow formed on the wall looks like a miniature shadow of the temple tower.
Hemakuta Hill
Not one of the tallest hills in Hampi. But this hill offers a splendid view of the sprawling ruins site. This hill is sprinkled generously with a large number of temples and arch ways and halls. The whole of the hill is fortified with tall wide stone walls. The ruins of which can be still be seen. Located at the south of Virupaksha temple.
Kadale Kalu Ganesha
Means Gram seed Ganesha ! The shape of the Ganesha statue is in the form of a gram seed. This is a 5 meter tall monolithic statue installed in an inner sanctum. The pillered hall infront is great with special carvings on.It’s located at the base of the Hemakuta hill, away from the Jain temples.
Sasive Kalu Ganesha
Means mustard seed Ganesha, since this Ganesha is in the shape of mustard seed! Ganapathi (Ganesha/Vinayaka) is notorious for his food habit. One day he ate somuch that his tummy almost busted. He just caught a snake and tied around his tummy as a belt to save his tummy.You can see the snake carved around his tummy. Also he holds the ‘ankush’, pasha (noose), and his broken tusk. The hand which holds modak (a kind of sweet) is broken and not reconstructed.Located very close to the Kadale Kalu Ganesha.
Jain temples
This is a case of mistaken identity. These temples are called/identified as jain temples owing to its architeture resembles Jain temples. They have beautifully detailed pyramid shaped roof structure.The fact is most of them are Shiva temples. But they are not functioning temples now. They are located on top of the Hemakuta Hills, adjusant and south of the virupaxa temple.

Monolithic Bull
Nandi, the monolithic bull, is one of the grandiose wonders in Hampi. This bull is locally known as Yeduru Basavanna, the ride of Lord Shiva. At the east end of Hampi bazaar, this bull is placed like a guard.

Ugra Narasimha/ Laxmi Narasimha
To the south of Virupaksha Temple, a top Hemkuta Hills, is the early ruins of Jain temples and the 6.7m tall monolith of 'Ugra Narasimha', a form of Lord Vishnu with head of a lion and body of a man. He is shown seated under the canopy of a seven-hooded snake. It was erected in 1528 during the reign of Krishnadevaraya and was carved out from a single boulder.
Badava Linga
This linga is again the largest monolithic linga in Hampi.Located next to the Narasimha statue. Legend has it that this was commissioned by a peasant woman and hence the name.The sanctum in which the linga is installed is always filled with water and a water channel is made to run through it.Hindu mythology has it that Lord Shiva kept his secret consort (river Ganga) in his hair as Parvathi being his ‘actual’ wife! Hence in all the Shiva temples you can see a water drip made to fall on the Shiva linga, to keep him drenched!
Vithala Temple
The Vithala temple is a World Heritage monument with fantastic sculptural work from the time of Vijayanagar Empire. It features 56 'Musical Pillars', which reverberate when tapped and an ornate stone chariot in the temple courtyard with an image of Garuda, the Bird-God and the 9m tall statue of Lord Ganesha along with recently excavated 'Nobleman's Palace'. To the east of Hampi Bazaar is the Vitthala temple, about 2 kms away. Located on the southern banks of the Tungabhadra River.
King's Balance
King's balance is a unique spot among the tours to Hampi. The King's Balance consists of two lofty carved granite pillars about 15 feet high supporting a stone beam about 12 feet, provided with three hoops on the underside. Also known as Tula Bhara or Tula Purushadana, the balance was used to weigh the kings of Vijayanagara on certain occasions like solar or lunar eclipse, New years day and coronation day against precious diamonds, gems, gold, silver, etc. and distribute them to the Brahmins.This 5-meter or so tall ‘balance’ is located near (southwest of) the Vittala temple.
Bhima’s Gate
This is one of the many gateways to the walled city. The gate(a huge arch) is interesting with its construction and the carvings on it. The gate got it’s name from the legendary Bhima of the Hindu epic Mahabaratha. A figure of Bhima, one of the five brothers - the Pandavas, is carved on the gate. Probably this is the reason for the name of the gate. Also there are carvings of Draupadi (Pandava’s wife) tying her hair. Also Kichaka vada (killig of Kechaka) who tried to molest Draupathi too is depicted here. Draupathi took the vow that she would not tie her hair unless it’s washed with Keechaka’s blood. Bhima eventually killed Keechaka and tied Draupathi’s hair. All of these are depicted on the gate. Another interesting feature of the gate is its smart design. You cannot see through the arch of the gate. That is immediately after the entrance strands a huge wall. You’ve to take a deviation and turn around to actually cross the gate.

Elephant Stables
This huge stable, a beautiful example of Hindu-Muslim style of architecture, housed about 11 elephants in separate compartments.

Lotus Mahal
A delightful blend of Hindu and Muslim style of architecture, this palace features two-storied elegant pavilion situated in the 'ladies' section' of the palace.

Hazara Rama Temple
The 15th century temple has finely carved basalt pillars in its hall depicting incarnations of Lord Vishnu while the sculptures on the exteriors of the hall depict main events from Ramayana.
Queen's Bath
A 15m square structure, Queen's Bath is 1.8m deep, has stark exteriors and highly ornate interiors and by delicate and elegantly ornamented arched corridors and projecting balconies.
This is the first ruined structure you would see when you enter into the Royal center from the Kamalapura-Hampi main road. South of the Hazara Rama temple.
Krishna Temple or Balakrishna Temple
This was built by the the king (Krishnadevaraya) in 1513 AD to celebrate the conquest of the eastern kingdom of Udayagiri or Utkala (in present day Orissa state). The main idol installed inside the temple is the statue of BalaKrishna (baby Krishna). This idol now is in the state museum in Chennai (the one near the Montieth Road). A huge slab installed inside the courtyard of the temple states the story of this temple and the conquest. This is one of the must see sites in Hampi. The carvings are especially spectacular with the Yarzis (dragon) on the pillars and the entrances flanged with impressive carvings of elephants. Many small shrines and pillared halls inside. The temple kitchen is located at the south east of the main shrine. The main tower at the east is an impressive sight with numerous carvings on it.You can see the carvings of the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu in this temple.

Anjeyanadri Hill
At the top of the hill is the temple dedicated for Hanuman. The statue of Hanuman is carved on the rock. Also is the small shrine for Rama and his consort Sita inside the temple. The view from the hilltop is marvelous. Patches of paddy fields, Coconut tree plantations and the whole of the ruins sites is visible stretching into the horizon. You have to climb 600 steps to reach the hill top.

Tungabhadra Dam
Tungabhadra Dam is built across the river Tungabhadra. It is one of the biggest multi purpose dams in Karnataka. It is spread over an area of 400 sq.kms. It has 33 gates from which water gushes out forming it into a breath-taking site. The water canals of this Dam genarate 27 mega watts of electricity and also irrigates thousands of acres of lands.

Trip to Innovative Film City

We were in search of a short weekend trip around Bangalore. googling revealed that our choices are limited because our frequent weekend trips in the past two years. May Sun was deterring us from visiting remaining places.

"You would have never seen a place like this" The radio advertisement caught my attention and
after some search on the net found about this new place named "Innovative film city" , which was opened just a few weeks back. Thought it will be something like Ramoji film city at Hyderabad.
My friend also got interested and we decided to explore the film city.

We started on May 1st Morning, went to pick my friend from Bannarghata Road. We decided to take the NICE Road which connect Bannarghata road to Mysore road. To join NICE road from Bannarghata road we had to go through a bad patch for one km. There was not even mud road constructed, it was just mud field where only big trucks could travel. My SX4 took the challenge and displayed its off road capabilities. NICE Road reminded the Roads abroad. It is sad that govt doesn't support the project.

How to reach - From Bangalore City centre – Innovative Film City is just 32 kms towards Mysore.
State Highway 17: A 4-lane Toll-free existing Highway. 3.5 kms. from SH-17 towards Coca Cola and Toyota Kirloskar plants; 30 minutes drive from Bangalore city.
BMIC (NICE) Corridor: A 6-lane Toll-paid, barricaded, upcoming Expressway developed by Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises Ltd. 1.5 kms. from expressway towards Coca Cola and Toyota plants; 20 minutes drive from Bangalore city.

We needed a vacation to reclaim our life back from stress of the city life. A long weekend was coming and we decided to go to Coorg known as the Scotland of the east. Living in a city, you can quite forget the beauty and power of Nature and its entire splendor. After some net surfing we found this eco-friendly home stay called rainforest retreat where you can in the middle of an Organic Spice Plantation. We decide to try it out.

We set out for the journey on Saturday morning 6 AM from Bangalore. Usually on Mysore road we have breakfast at Kadu Mane. This time we wanted to try at Kamath. We reached Kamath Yatrinivas at 8 AM. We loved the special Idli wrapped in leaves.

The road till Hunsoor was nice and most of the time we could cruise at 120 kmph. After Hunsoor there is a diversion either to Virajpet or Mercara. Mercara road takes you to Coorg via Kushalnagar, which is shorter route. The Virajpet road is good but is slightly longer. We had seen in one of the reviews on the net about the horrible road via Kushalnagar. Somehow I decided to explore the Kushalnagar route ignoring Divya's warning, which I repented later.

We reached Madikeri at around 12:30. Rainforest retreat was a good 15 km from town. Signboard to Club Mahindra resort helped us to reach the first 10 km. Last 5 km showed the signs of thick rain forest. We were received by Harish at the cottage and our food was ready. The cottage was in the middle of the plantation and surrounded by clear streams. There was a pond next to the cottage and three lovely swans welcomed us.

The cottage was built like a Kodava home with western toilets and there was no TV or Heater as informed before. No mobile connectivity also :-). The cottage gives a quaint feel of living in the past. The lunch was rice, home made roties and filled with Baimbale curry (made from tender bamboo shoots) and other Kodava curries.

Evening we went for a walk to the nearby hills. The serene air was refreshing and view of the valley was breathtaking. We decided to come to the same place early morning and returned to the cottage. A boy built fireplace in the room to keep it warm. I have seen fake electric fireplaces at USA, but was seeing a real fire place for the first time.
We got up early morning on Sunday and went for a stroll. The view of misty mountains and densely forested valleys was breathtaking. chirping of the birds added a magic feeling to it.

After breakfast we began our trekking with our guide Nakul. He is Yoga teacher from Bangalore and was working with the Rain forest retreat for some time to experience Kodava culture. We were a group of three families. Our guide had warned us about Leaches and we had applied Lemon on our shoes and legs. After a while we started seeing interesting creatures on the way. I spotted a big colorful snail on the way and two kids in our group were thrilled to see it.
Next two kilometers of the trek was extremely steep. We struggled up the muddy, humid trail. We had to be careful about Leaches too. The power of lemon was wearing out and leaches started climbing our shoes. We were busy pulling out those creatures from shoes.We soon found us on the top a peak overlooking a breathtaking valley. We enjoyed the sight for a while and started our journey back. It started raining and we took a different route back this time. It was shorter route but tough. Rain and soggy mud made all the leaches come alive. We reached back to the base around 2 PM and everybody was tired and hungry.

Afternoon we went to Madikeri town. Being a sunday after noon, town was asleep. Most of the shops were closed and there was no traffic at all in the roads. Looks like Madikeri has only one traffic signal and we slowly walked across that signal not realizing it is a traffic signal!. Reminded us Bangalore and I was wondering if I can find any empty traffic signal even on a Sunday. Evening we went to Raja's seat from where we could see the beautiful Valleys and catch the magnificent view of setting sun.

Monday morning we went to Omkareshwara temple, which is a blend of both Islamic and Gothic style of architecture. Some film shooting was going on there. Evening we visited the Madikeri fort. Two life size elephants in the compound was the main attraction. Evening we decided to try Coorg International for Dinner. Food was great and ambiance was nice.

Next day morning we started our journey back to Bangalore. Nisargadhama and Tibettan Monastry was on the way. Kaveri Nisargadhama is located a few kilometres away from the Mysore-Coorg border and not in the hilly terrains of interior Coorg. The first sight that greets you is that of a long, hanging bridge with river Cauvery serenely flowing beneath. on the other side of the bridge is Nisargadhama resort, sprawled over 25 acres. On one side are picturesque hanging cottages made from bamboo, suspended over water and surrounded by abundant bamboo grooves. We walked along river Cauvery for some time, hearing the the calm soothing sound of the river. Among the bamboo forest, there was beautiful tree top hut made of bamboo. We climbed on top and relaxed for a while. Next destination was Tibettan Monastry and settlement at Bylakuppe.

Pearl Valley

It actually is a small stream but very beautiful, nevertheless. There are a couple of waterfalls in a small narrow valley. The falling water hits the rocks and bounces up in droplets of water all through these waterfalls. And the bouncing and falling droplets in the backdrop of the sun are a visual treat, appear like drops of pearl which brings in the name for Muthyala Madu(Muthu is pearls in Kannada, Madu is a small water body). But keep in mind that you can find water in the falls only for some days after it rains.

How to Reach - It is an hours drive from Bangalore and must be almost 40kms. Its in the periphery of Banneraghatta National Park. To reach the place, head out on Banneraghatta Road, continue beyond Banneraghatta National Park and reach Anekal. Take a right from Anekal and drive for an other 10 minutes to reach the valley. An alternate, slightly longer road is to reach Anekal via Attibele by taking Hosur Road.

It is a huge 18 meter high monolithic statue of Lord Gommatheshwara on the top of a hill (Vindyagiri or Indragiri) is considered the tallest in the world. Just opposite to the the Gomatheshwara statue is another hill (Chandragiri) with some Jain temples and the tomb of Chandragupta Maurya.
How to Reach - Distance 149km. From Bangalore take Tumkur road (NH4) to reach Nelamangala (Approx 28 kms). From Nelamangala take left turn to drive along Bangalore-Mangalore highway (NH48). Kunigal town is on the way approx 46 kms from Nelamangala. Continue on the NH48 till you reach Hirisave, from here take a left turn - a state highway connects Hirisave to Shravanabelagola covering 18 kms of very good and scenic roads.

a whitewashed fairytale mosque containing the tomb of the
Muslim saint Haji Ali.
Juhu Beach - JUHU Situated 30 km from the city, it is a crowded beach with residential apartments and bungalows surrounding it. It seems as if the entire population of the area descends on the beach for a breath of fresh air!.
Marine Drive - Marine Drive runs along the shoreline of the Arabian Sea from Nariman Point to the foot of Malabar Hill. It's one of Mumbai's most popular romantic spot and sunset view is amazing.

Shivanasamudra (or Shivasamudram) is a small town in southern Karnataka, India near Mysore. Near the town is the famous Shivanasamudram waterfall. The Kaveri River splits here into two branches and each branch cascades down rocky cliffs. The more popularly viewed cascade is known as Gaganachukki and the other cascade is known as Bharachukki.
Talakad - Talakad is a small town on the left bank of the Cauvery River. The main attraction at this place is the 4th century temple of Lord Kirti Narayana, also known as the Vaideshwara temple.
How to Reach - Bangalore – Mysore road or Kanakapura road. If you are taking Mysore road, you need to turn left at Maddur and drive some distance. On Kanakapura road, keep driving for around 120 kms on the highway. Shivanasamudra is very close to the highway. Kanakapura road is usually devoid of much traffic and is preferred way for driving. The roads are not very good and it may require 3 hours to cover the distance.

Botanical Garden - This garden has wide variety of plants and include Italian and Japanese sections. Here you can find different types of roses, imported shrubs, rare flowering plants, eucalyptus trees and several old trees. Doddabetta peak - At a hight of 2623 meters above sea level, this
